Organizations Benefit by Promoting Relaxing Vacations for Employees

The stories of employees so dedicated to their jobs that they struggle to leave the office, resonate throughout a variety of industries. But, is this actual dedication, or is it a result of extreme anxiety due to fear?
Those working in the contact center industry are no strangers to anxiety. In fact, research has shown that these workers deal with increased heart problems, anxiety disorders and other health issues that can have a serious impact on their quality of life.
For those City employees in the U., the ability to completely relax while on vacation seems to be waning. According to the findings of a survey released last week conducted by CREDANT Technologies, many of these workers will have difficulty relaxing while taking a break.
This survey found that 83 percent of city workers plan to take their mobile phone or BlackBerry (News - Alert) with them on vacation. Another 65 percent confessed that they will make contact with the office. While some of these employees are not in a contact center setting, many of them to have direct contact with the public and serve a similar purpose.
More than a quarter of workers revealed in the survey that they intend to check their e-mails at least once a day, while 14 percent reported that they cannot resist e-mailing work more than once a day. E-mails are viewed by 18 percent of employees two to three times per day. Only 40 percent of workers reported that they were comfortable enough to resist the temptation to e-mail the office while away on vacation.
The percentage of U.K. workers that will carry mobile devices with them on vacation for work purposes is surprising, but the number of employees that plan to actually take their laptops with them without proper security is even more surprising.
More than one in three U.K. employees plans to take their laptops along on vacation. A bigger problem than the lack of relaxation for the employee is the fact that one in five do not secure the device and 68 percent do not encrypt information.
Michael Callahan senior vice president and chief marketing officer for CREDANT Technologies said in a company statement: "Whether it’s paranoia on the part of employees, or unrealistic demands from employers, the fact is that this summer numerous workers will be accessing the corporate network from all over the globe.”
“Employers must face up to the fact that their employees diligence, or paranoia for that matter, could be putting the company at risk and it’s their responsibility to ensure the necessary steps are taken to protect the company’s crown jewels, it’s data, wherever it travels.”
Whether the employee is working within the contact center or not, the organization must be sure that it encourages its employees to take time away to actually relax. Not only does this help to contribute to a healthier employee, it also helps to ensure that the company’s information is protected.
